Relying on strong defense, the A&M Consolidated girls basketball team built a 20-point halftime lead and didn’t let up, putting away Bryan 48-11 in nondistrict play Tuesday at Tiger Gym.

The game stood at a standstill for two-and-a-half minutes in the first quarter until Consol senior Madyson Shroyer’s layup put the Lady Tigers on the scoreboard. Three free throws and two 3-pointers by Mariya Scott and Jessica Ransom later, Consol (5-1) held an 11-0 lead entering the second quarter and with the pace set for the rest of the game.

Consol head coach Wendy Hines said the Lady Tigers are trying to play at a faster pace offensively but playing sound defense proved key to winning Tuesday.

“Everything starts with defense for us,” Hines said. “When we’re lax on defense, it just kills us, so we know that’s our jump start, and I thought it was a little slow, but our defense is definitely what gets us going. I didn’t want to press too much. I know [Bryan] is in a rebuilding year and coach [Chris] Jones is going to do a fantastic job with this team. A lot of respect there. I thought our girls did good, especially being put in kind of a half-court situation with us not pressing. I’m proud of them.”

Bryan (1-1) scored it’s first basket with 5:04 left in the second quarter and earned its last point of the half with a free throw by Kennedy Gibbs.

Bryan scored four points in the third quarter and held Consol to just eight points. But the Lady Tigers went on a 14-0 run in the fourth quarter with 3-pointers by Sarah Hathorn and Claire Sisco over the final three minutes and a layup by Cierra Gilbert to close out the run.

Scott, who scored 11 points, said staying true to their strengths will bring the Lady Tigers wins this season.

“We are a defensive team. This year, defense is our key,” Scott said. “That is what’s going to win us games, championships, everything. We’re a good defensive team.”

Consol enters the Thanksgiving break with the team’s best start in the last four years.

“It’s a good start,” Hines said. “I told the girls let’s start the Thanksgiving break being 5-1 and that’s pretty good right there. We haven’t started out that good since I took over as head coach, and I’m proud of them. That was our goal, and we reached that, and I know everybody needs a well-deserved break righ...
