Bryan starting pitcher Jessica Adams struck out 15, and Brenda Sanchez had three hits, but the Lady Vikings needed some timely hitting late to get past struggling Cypress Park 5-3 on Tuesday night in District 14-6A softball action at Lady Viking Field.

After the Lady Tigers rallied to tie the game at 3 in the fourth inning, Sanchez drove in the go-ahead run with a two-out single to right field in the home half and helped Bryan (23-8, 12-1) stay in the hunt for a hotly contested district title.

The Lady Vikings are tied with 13th-ranked Cypress Ranch (17-4, 12-1) for the lead in 14-6A after the Lady Mustangs had their district bye Tuesday night. Bryan continues district play Friday at Cypress Springs before returning home to host Cy-Ranch next Tuesday. Bryan won the previous meeting between the district leaders 5-1 on March 12 in Cypress.

“We’ve got to do a better job,” Bryan coach Enrique Luna said. “We can’t just go over [to Cy-Springs] and think they’re going to hand it to us. You beat somebody in the first half ... sometimes it’s hard to get the kids to understand they’re still going to come out and play the game. They don’t fear you. We’ve got to get the job done Friday, and obviously next week is going to be a big one.”

The Lady Vikings still would have been looking up at Cy-Ranch in the district standings had it not found a way to get past Cy-Park (8-15-1, 2-11) after a disastrous fourth inning Tuesday.

Adams allowed just one base runner in the other six innings, but a series of mental lapses in the infield allowed the Lady Tigers to rally despite not hitting the ball out of the infield in the fourth.

Jordan Evans, Krista Torres and Haley Cox opened the inning with three straight infield hits to load the bases, Cox reaching safely when nobody covered first base on her bunt attempt. Evy Mendez then hit a grounder to second, and Evans beat Kylie Hernandez’s throw to the plate to score Cy-Park’s first run.

After Adams struck out Kelly Martinez, Lexi Ruiz hit a chopper past Adams that slowly rolled to an uncovered second base, allowing Torres and Cox to score and tie the score at 3.

“It was a little bit of intense scenarios we haven’t gotten used to in awhile,” Luna said. “People just put the ball in play. Hats off to them because they did a good job putting the ball in play and finding the holes when they needed to. It wasn’t anything fancy.”

Bryan didn’t waste time bouncing back.
