Jessica Adams cheered up her ailing mother with a home run and a stellar pitching performance in leading the Bryan softball team to a 6-0 victory over the Cypress Woods Lady Wildcats on Tuesday night at Lady Viking Field in District 14-6A play.
Bryan coach Enrique Luna joked with Jessica Adams about hitting a home run and pitching well for her mother, who was feeling a little under the weather following her trip last week to California to see Bryan play in a tournament.
Donna Adams followed the game via Twitter with her daughter mentioned in most of the tweets as she helped Bryan (18-8, 7-1) end the first half of district play tied for first with Bridgeland and Cypress Ranch.
“Jessica really stepped up and did a great job,” Luna said.
Jessica Adams led off the bottom of the first inning with her ninth home run of the season, then the sophomore right-hander took a no-hitter into the seventh. Cypress Woods (7-7, 5-3) nicked her for back-to-back singles, but she got a grounder back to the mound and struck out the next two to seal the shutout. Adams (13-5) struck out eight, mixing her dropball and curveball and spotting her fastball on the outside corner.
Adams also led an 11-hit attack with a 3-for-3 effort including a pair of doubles. Freshman Kylie Hernandez was 2 for 2, including her first homer, and Jade Chavarris added two hits and two RBIs.
“It was nice to see our offense get going again,” Luna said. “We didn’t hit the ball very well in California last week, but [Adams] pitched very well in the three games she had last week. I thought our defense played really well behind her, and we pride ourselves on that.”
