There’s a lot of pressure on the anchor leg of a relay team, but Bryan senior Da’janae Pharms takes it all in stride.

Pharms runs the final leg of the Bryan girls 4x200- and 4x100-meter relays, which finished second and third, respectively, at the Class 6A 13-14 area track meet Wednesday at Bryan’s Merrill Green Stadium.

All five Lady Viking running entries qualified for the 6A Region II meet, which is April 26-27 at Waco Midway.

“I’m super excited for our girls,” Bryan head girls track coach Jennifer Pittman said. “We [set personal records] in several events, and I’m super excited to be taking every single one from area on to the regional meet.”

As a team, the Lady Vikings finished fifth with 51 points. Cypress Woods won the team title with 131 points.

Pittman and Pharms said running in front of friends and family gave her squad a boost.

“A home crowd is always good because you get all that crowd participation, so you have all that adrenaline going,” Pharms said. “And then it’s just a good thing to win on your home base.”

For the boys, Justin Sheridan was the lone regional qualifier for Bryan, posting a second-place throw of 148 feet, 5 inches in the discus. The Vikings placed 16th with eight points, and Round Rock won the boys team title with 147.

Pharms kicked it into an extra gear on her 4x200 leg, helping Bryan edge Cypress Springs by 0.04 seconds with a second-place time of 1:39.74. Bryan’s Ferderkia Miles, Symoria Adkins and fellow senior Rayla Hawkins made up that relay team.

“[Pharms] did a fantastic job,” Pittman said. “She got [Cy-Springs] at the finish line, and we PR’d in that race for the season and ran 2 seconds better than we’ve run all season.”

Pharms’ 4x100 team that included Miles, Hawkins and Rajer Gurode clocked in at 47.08 for third.

“We push each other to do our best,” Pharms said of her relay teammates. “It gives us the strength to go all out.”

Gurode also qualified for the regional meet in two individual events, finishing third in both the 100 and 200 in 11.71 and 25.07. Adkins took second with a time of 15.21 in the 100 hurdles, and Sailor Todaro’s fifth-place mark of 10-0 in the pole vault qualified her for regionals as an alternate.

“It’s one of those things as far as sprinters are concerned ... they have grit,” Pittman said. “They are competitive kids. They’ve always been competitive kids. I’ve known them since they were freshmen, and they’ve always wanted to win. They come out here, and especially in front of a home crowd, they don’t want to get beat.”
